一本の線

長野県立美術館に新設された「交流スペース」のために制作されたアニメーション。縦3メートル・横12メートルの壁2面を組み合わせた、L字型の大型スクリーンに上映される。シンプルな単色で構成された画面に現れた「1本の線」は、次のようなルールのもとで動く。

• あらかじめ決められた軌道を「なぞるように」移動する。つまり、全ての物語が1本の線でつながっている。
  
• 線の長さは、ほぼ一定に保たれる。
  

線の長さが一定という制約があるため、物語の全貌を1枚の絵として同時に見ることはできない。視聴者は絶え間なく動いていく線を目で追いながら、隠されたストーリーをひもとき、想像することで、作品に主体的に参加して楽しむことができる。

小鳥・少女・潜水艦・ワニ・クモの巣 など、1本の線が多様に変化しながら物語が展開されていくが、映像を通して視聴すると、1つめの「ある小鳥の物語」、2つめの「ある少女の物語」が終わったあと、2つが組み合わさることで、3つめの新しい物語が生まれるという、3部構成となっていることが明らかになる。L字型の壁面を利用した「2つの物語が出会う」構成が、映像と音楽の両方で試みられている。

This animation was created for the new "Exchange Space" at the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum. The work is shown on a large L-shaped screen, combining two walls of 3 meters in length and 12 meters in width. The "line" that appears on the screen, composed of simple monochromatic colors, moves under the following rules.

• It moves "as if tracing" a predetermined path. In other words, all the stories are connected by a single line.
  
• The length of the line is kept almost constant.
  

Because of the constraint of the constant length of the line, the entire story cannot be seen as a single picture at the same time. The viewer can enjoy the work by actively participating in it, following the constantly moving lines with his or her eyes, trying to figure out and imagine the hidden story.

The story unfolds as a single line changes in a variety of ways: a little bird, a girl, a submarine, a crocodile, a spider's web, etc. Watching through the video, it becomes clear that the work is composed of three parts: the first "story of a little bird," the second "story of a girl," and the third "story of a spider. Using the L-shaped wall, the composition of "two stories meeting" is attempted in both video and music.
