気配の箱

スモークガラス状の板で囲まれた箱の中に浮かぶ、光の点群。一部の光が規則性を持って動き出すことで、突如として人の生々しい気配が浮かび上がる。しかし動きが止まると、確かに感じられていたはずのその気配は、静かに失われていく。
1973年、認知心理学の分野で発見された、生物の動きを十数個の特徴点だけで認知できるという biological motion と呼ばれる現象は、モーションキャプチャ技術をはじめ、一部のアニメーションの世界では知られた存在であった。この作品は、特殊なロボットアームによって12個の光点を3次元的に制御することで、人間の姿を見せることなく、その「気配」のみを展示する試みである。実物大のヒトと同じ立体感・ボリューム感を持った biological motion は、否応なしにある種の緊張感を与えてくる。それと同時に、我々に備わっている、身の周りの生命体を瞬時に検知する精緻なプロセスにも思いが馳せられる。

A group of dots of light floating in a box surrounded by smoked glass-like plates. As some of the lights begin to move in a regular pattern, the vivid presence of a person suddenly emerges. However, when the movement stops, the presence that should have been felt is quietly lost.
In 1973, a phenomenon called biological motion was discovered in the field of cognitive psychology, in which the movement of an organism can be recognized using only a dozen or so characteristic points. This phenomenon was known in the world of motion capture technology and some other forms of animation. This work is an attempt to exhibit only the "presence" of a human being, without showing the human figure, by controlling 12 light points in three dimensions with a special robot arm. The biological motion, which has the same three-dimensionality and volume as a full-scale human being, inevitably gives us a certain sense of tension. At the same time, it reminds us of the elaborate process we have to instantly detect life forms around us.
